Some thoughts on zoo photography
~~following a visit to Paignton zoo~~
1 The most interesting and photogenic animals will be behind glass. The glass will be much besmeared by the hands of a thousand visitors. If the glass is clear someone with a stripy/brightly coloured tshirt will stand behind you and cast a reflection.
2 Animals not behind glass will
(A) stand immobile with their back to you.
(B) stand/lie as far away as their enclosure allows amongst whatever undergrowth that will force you to duck bob and weave with a zoom lens trying to get a clear line of sight.
(C) lie in deep deep shadow
3 If you do the sensible thing and take a tripod, there will be no room for it when it's needed - or the animal that has been stationary for hours will go indoors to feed in the time it takes you to set it up.
4 Despite the whole conservation intentions of the best zoos, you will leave with a vague sense of guilt after spending the day gawping at fellow beings in captivity for your entertainment.
